Annie the musical a review New Theatre Oxford

A review by Nicholas Newman

Annie the musical conquered the stage of the New Theatre in Oxford last night, this great West End show will not disappoint. It is packed with great and memorable song and dance numbers, which make it a joy to live.

The story is about a young girl in a New York orphanage of the 1930s, who gets the opportunity to have a fairy-tale Christmas with a New York billionaire. This award-winning  musical is packed full of unforgettable songs including It’s The Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street, and I Don’t Need Anything But You and Tomorrow!

As my companion watching the performance said, “I highly recommend the performance, it is fun, but it is also full of fantastic dance and music numbers.” Moreover, she added, “it is performed by a great team of professional actors with a stage set packed full of wonderful colours and designs.”

The team of actors is led by award-winning actoress, Anita Dobson (EastEnders, Wicked, Loose Women, Chicago, Call the Midwife) as the tyrannical Miss Hannigan!

One thing is clear, despite it being 35 year, since the original film on which the musical was based was released; the performance is still full of freshness and enjoyment. It is well worth seeing!
