Greengauge 21 calls for the development of a unified bus and rail network with a coherent fares system

Leading transport Think Tank Greengauge 21 is calling for the creation of an easy-to-use joined-up national transport network to:

  • improve productivity;
  • address regional imbalances and social inequality, particularly in “left behind” places;
  • improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions.  

Influencers and stakeholders from across the region are meeting tomorrow at the University of Plymouth to discuss a package of policy, physical design and infrastructure measures specifically for the South West that could be developed into a working plan that can be put before Government.
Jim Steer, Greengauge 21 Director said:
“we will be discussing the opportunities that locally-generated initiatives in the South West can bring to improve public transport. I believe that the South West can lead the way towards a fair and trustworthy system of rail fares with the added advantage of working on bus services too.”
“We will also be talking about network resilience – on a day when trains from Devon & Cornwall to the rest of the country are having to use a lengthy single-track diversion route as planned tunnel engineering works take place. It is good that Government has now allocated funding towards the first stage of the works needed at Dawlish, where the sea wall was so badly breached five years ago.”
“But it is clear that much more investment will be needed to keep the Dawlish-Teignmouth line open. Even then, the prospect over the decades ahead is of disruption from extreme weather and sea-level rises, and the more substantial engineering work needed will inevitably cause disruption when it is carried out. And so for that reason, we will be discussing the case to accelerate the re-opening of the second line from Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton and Tavistock to give the whole of the south west the resilience of rail service provision it needs.”
